Romir Patel is the founder and CEO of Vertex, a research company building foundation models for extreme-purpose robotics — firefighters, combat medics, search-and-rescue crews, and field operators working in environments where mistakes cost more than money.
His background is the two problems Vertex is built around: training frontier models to make hard decisions, and evaluating those decisions rigorously enough to trust them. At Bespoke Labs he built reinforcement-learning environment-generation and validation infrastructure for frontier-lab coding agents — thousands of hermetically-verified training environments, adversarially hardened against answer leakage. He co-developed TextArena, an open-source agentic-evaluation framework spanning 74+ strategic-reasoning environments — theory-of-mind, negotiation, deception — that has ranked 200+ models; the project raised $350K+ from OpenRouter, Plastic Labs, Anthropic, and Amazon, and was recognized by Andrej Karpathy.
He has done post-training and RLHF research on frontier models at Caltech under Prof. Anima Anandkumar, and AI research at MIT’s CSAIL and McGovern Institute, with published work at NeurIPS 2025. He studies computer science and artificial intelligence at Carnegie Mellon University.
He also co-authored published work in affordable, bodyworn motion capture (Mesquite MoCap, arXiv:2512.22690) — browser-deployable sensorimotor data collection aimed at lowering the cost of training-data generation for embodied AI.
